I think it's worth considering as well the power, in such crises, of nationalistic fervor, not only as a social and political phenomenon, but as a societal expression of individually felt identity. The question of "Why," asked perhaps by a Frenchman, "should I help THEM (the Greeks)?" requires that we understand the emotional valence attached to sovereign state as a giver of identity. The nation, even when it is an historical accident (as in Iraq), seems incredibly compelling to citizens and I've never seen an adequate treatment of why that would be so.

Connecting the operating principles of consciousness ("If we don’t have to do something, it drops out of our minds") to the need for a Consumer Protection Agency really shows the value of knowing more about what we don't know we know. We need something to counter the influence of bank lobbyists who make sure their interests are those most available to the consciousness of legislators. Really interesting post!

I found this post interesting in light of the Newsweek article last month (12/10/09)by Sharon Begley entitled "Red Mind, Blue Mind"which discussed how the inerplay between party affiliation, personality, and other psychological factors influence the way Democrats and Republicans differentially understand science (eg. Does global warming exist? Does the science support that women under 45 get a mammogram?)As per Begley's article,
of particular interest was the work of Jost, who found that there are significant personality differences btwn R and D: The former are generally more open to new experiences and ideas, The latter tend to be more conscientious, more energetic, and more emotionally stable.

What do you think Ken?

OBAMA is in a MOVIE about hedgies. He is featured in a movie-- about greedy hedge funds called "Stock Shock." Even though the movie mostly focuses on Sirius XM stock being naked short sold to hell (5 cents/share), I liked it because it exposes the dark side of Wall Street. DVD is everywhere but cheaper at www.stockshockmovie.com

I don't really know much about the security protocols of Ben Gurion Airport, although I have experienced them many many times as an Israeli citizen. The "inoccent questions" routine did made its way into popular culture, stand up comedy etc., where it is parodied occasionally. Still, there is one thing that is quite obvious but never discussed, never mentioned by the media and probably in most circles of Israeli (Jewish) society - the "innocent questioning" is only the second line of defence, the first being national [ethnic? racial?] profiling. All arabs [Palestinians, Arab Israeli citizens but also other nationalities with suspicious names or appearence - probably only those that don't have a "good" US or EU passport] are quietly and discretly whisked away to a seperate side room, where they are checked thoroughly, many times physically, and often - as they report - in a humiliating manner.
Now, I really want to survive the flights I take, and I really don't know what to do. But I think that when advocating Israeli airport security it should be known what works so well in Israel.
